Let’s talk about how URL structure helps you rank better in the search engines, and keep your site tidy and organized. Obviously search engines like organized content, they prefer it structured in easy to understand pathways.
- A good would look this: www.mysite.com/mechanical/doodad/red.html
- A bad example could look like: www.mysite.com/stuff/products/022109.html
Just looking at the good URL structure above, you and the Search Engine can easy deduce that page is about a red mechanical doodad. Of course it doesn’t stop there, it reads the content of the page and matches it against several items like title tag, content keywords, and matching keywords in links, But the URL is just the first piece that gives it a “Big Picture” idea of that page.
Now what if you used the bad example? It doesn’t give a clear picture of the pages content. It doesn’t offer any additional details that might correlate with the pages content. You must realize that Search Engines are very literal and logical systems, the more logical and literal you are in structuring your site and it’s content, the more they appreciate it. So follow best practices, create precisely named files and directories that reflect your pages content.
A second advantage to making sure your files and directories are set-up to provide these clean URL structures, is that your site will be easier to manage with everything organized. Once you get to the point where you have so many pages of content you can’t remember what’s on them, you can easily reference what you need BECAUSE it’s in a logical and literal structure.
