Keyword is a term you will hear often, they are specific words or phrases that identify what your web site pages are about, they define what your searching for, and they are used in many paid advertising to know when to show your ads and to who.

How keywords define your web sites content:

A search engines spider will crawl your web sites pages reading the content, it figures out what each page is about by the volume of keywords you have on each page. So if you had a page about doodads, you would want to use the keyword term doodads several times, more often than any other term, in your copy and in your title tag. This would tell the search engines your page was about doodads. I personally prefer a 3-5% insertion rate which equates using the keyword 3-5 times for every 100 words used.

How Keywords define what you search for:

You use keywords every day, every time you enter text in a search engine to look for something, you just entered a keyword or keyword phrase. It compares the keyword terms you used to search against that keyword located in millions of pages. It then returns your result based on the keywords you used and many other factors.

How keywords are used in paid advertising, primarily paid search:

When you set-up your marketing campaigns with any of the search engines, you use keywords your customers would generally use to look for your products or services. Some keyword terms are used more often than others, so you need to know how to determine which keywords and keyword phrases work best for your objectives.

I will be posting a lot more information on paid search, and providing more details on keywords and using them in your marketing strategy in the future, so check back often for more updates.

I also want to point out, this post is intended to be helpful for people trying to understand and learn about online marketing by beginning with the basics, but it’s also an example on the subject! If you note I used the term “keyword” as my primary keyword. I used it 15 times in a post that is 425 words long. I also used several secondary keyword phrases like the plural “keywords”, “keyword terms”, and “keyword phrases”. Search engines should have no problem understanding that this post is about keywords. Now if I can just get a few hundred inbound links to this post, I should show up high in the rankings. :p
